VA St. Louis Health Care System
National Veterans Golden Age Games
On Wednesday, January 12th the St. Louis VA Medical Center held a kick-off event for the 26th National Veterans Golden Age Games. The facility was selected to host the event which will run from May 30 to June 4, 2012. The majority of the events will be held at the America Center and throughout the surrounding St. Louis Metropolitan area. The kick-off event started at 3 p.m. and was held in four locations. At the Jefferson Barracks Division Gym in Building 63 and the Patriot’s Café in Building 24. At the John Cochran Division it was held in the Patriot’s Café on the third floor and at the Hope Recovery Center Atrium. A short DVD from the 2010 games held in Des Moines, IA was shown, plus a demonstration of one of the competitive events. Refreshments were served. Volunteers from Southwest Airlines, who were in St. Louis for a convention, assisted with the kick-off.
“Life begins at 55” has never been truer for Veterans competing in the National Veterans Golden Age Games. This event clearly demonstrates that sports and fitness are important for all Americans, at any age. It is a national show-case for the preventive and therapeutic value of sports, fitness, and recreation. The St. Louis facility is excited to have the opportunity to host it. By doing so, the St. Louis VA will become the first facility to have hosted all three of VA’s national rehabilitation programs that move annually to new host cities. Their successful experiences in hosting the National Veterans Creative Arts Festival in 1989 and 2007, as well as the National Veterans Wheelchair Games in 2004 are one of the reasons the St. Louis MO VAMC did not hesitate to accept this challenge. The staff in St. Louis is dedicated to supporting Veterans to maintain healthy lifestyles as they age.
The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Canteen Service (VCS) and Help Hospitalized Veterans (HHV) co-sponsor the National Veterans Golden Age Games each year. This partnership fosters an exceptional, quality event that promises serious competition and lasting memories for our nation’s older Veterans. We look forward to partnering with them to bring the Veterans who will attend the 2012 games in St. Louis the best experience ever.
