Do you want to reclaim the foundation on which your marriage was built? Do you want to renew your trust and commitment to your partner? Do you want to rekindle the love that drew you together? Do you feel that you have a strong relationship with your partner, but want to make it even better? The VA St. Louis Health Care System is offering marriage enrichment opportunities designed to help you and your partner meet your relationship goals. These retreat weekends are open to all veterans: active duty, National Guard, and reserve.

The materials used for the retreats are from the PAIRS (Practical Application of Intimate Relationship Skills) Foundation and are facilitated by VA staff trained and certified in PAIRS. Couples will receive many tools and skills enabling them to build stronger relationships including enhanced communication, self-worth, empathy, emotional expression, and healthy conflict resolution. Visit PAIRS.com for more information.

The first marriage enrichment weekend was held at the end of June. Read what some of the participants had to say about their experience:
“I really enjoyed the retreat because I was taught the tools that I need to communicate effectively with my spouse, and then provided hands-on practical application of the tools with real life scenarios.”

“I would strongly recommend this retreat to other couples.  We were given tools that after 28 years of marriage we did not have.”

“Taking the time to work on our relationship often gets overlooked.  This gave us an opportunity to focus on us.”

“[A highlight of the weekend] was being with people with some of the same issues as us, and just getting away for a relaxing and learning weekend.”

“The hotel accommodations and staff were amazing.  But most of all, the [retreat] facilitators were the key!  They created a safe, open environment and presented the information in a way that was easy to follow.”

“At the beginning of this weekend…I was ready to give up.  Now, our relationship is better than it has ever been.”

The next marriage enrichment weekend is Friday evening, September 7, through noon Sunday, September 9, 2012. The weekend is funded by the Veterans Administration and includes registration, retreat materials, two nights lodging and meals. For an application form, or for more information, call the VA St. Louis Health Care System chaplain service at (314) 894-6566.  If you are unable to attend the September retreat, inquire about the marriage enrichment weekends we are planning for the months ahead.
