VA St. Louis Health Care System
My HealtheVet Secure Messaging Now Available
Secure Messaging is a web-based message system that allows participating VA Veterans and VA health care teams to bi-directionally communicate non-urgent, health-related information in a private and safe computer environment.
In order for Veterans to utilize Secure Messaging, they need to have internet access, an active account with My HealtheVet (www.myhealth.va.gov), and perform a one-time In-Person Authentication (IPA) process at any VAMC facility. IPA complies with VA policy to verify and protect a Veteran’s identity.
Secure Messaging is an important tool as the VHA embraces the Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT) care model. Creating an electronic means of access is critical for Veterans to access hospital clinical services and business functions.
Secure Messaging offers benefits to both patients and providers. Patients have 24-hour access to their Health Care Team, feel more in control of their care, and enjoy the personalized attention from their provider. For the provider, this access improves the patient/provider collaboration by increasing the opportunities for information sharing. More importantly, Secure Messaging minimizes “telephone tag”, saves time, and utilizes CPRS to streamline record keeping.
Secure Messaging will save our healthcare teams time in relaying test results to answering additional questions. The staff are able to track messages and know if patients received and read it. Instead of spending time returning phone calls, we now have a quick and effective means of communication. It enables us to improve our rapport with patients and gives us more time to perform other functions. Secure Messaging is one of the greatest things happening right now in patient care.
We have received great feedback from the veterans as well. They really like it because the patients like knowing they have direct access to their healthcare team. For example, a 51 year-old patient was able to print their lab tests and place them in their lab journal on MyHealthe Vet web site. The communication with veteran is easy to document since we could attach it directly to the patient’s electronic record which is a much quicker way to resolve issues.

The primary goal of the program is to empower Veterans with improved quality, access, and value of healthcare services, improving overall patient satisfaction.
