Suggested Donations
If you or your organization would like to support veterans and the programs offered to them, please contact the St. Louis Volunteer Service Office. Your desire to provide care and comfort for veteran patients makes a major impact in providing necessities and amenities that may not otherwise be available. Please use the *St. Louis VA Donation Form when making donations to the St. Louis VA Medical Center.
Monetary donations enhance the VA Volunteer Service programs and support many activities that assist with accomplishing our goal of “Putting Veterans First”. Donations may be made to the medical center by individuals or organizations. We request that all cash donations be brought to the Voluntary Service office at which time a receipt noting the purpose and amount of the donation can be issued to the donor. Checks, however, may be hand carried or mailed. Please insure that checks are made out to the VA Medical Center with a notation of its purpose in the memo section. Non-monetary donations are needed as well and welcome to help with the care and comfort of our veteran patients. Feel free to contact us to find out what these needs are. Some examples include but are not limited to the items listed below:
- Canteen Coupon Books: Canteen books can be used by patients as monetary exchange at our medical center to purchase items they may need or desire.
- Stamps: Current postal rate stamps are needed for patients without funds to mail letters and cards.
- Writing materials: Paper, envelopes, stamped post cards, pens and pencils.
- Lap robes: Preferably made from terry cloth or fleece. Our nursing staff has instructed us that they can no longer use knitted or crocheted lap robes.
- Refreshments: All refreshments must be packaged and purchased from a bakery or licensed distributor. We also welcome items for our diabetic patients.
- Reading material: Paperback books only (westerns & mysteries are popular) and magazines current within 3 months. Organizations can also re-subscribe to magazine we are currently receiving.
- Personal care items: Voluntary Service tries to provide each patient with the following items upon admission. They include: shaving cream, disposable razor, comb, hair pick, hair brush, toothpaste, tooth brush, deodorant, shampoo, conditioner, denture cleanser, denture adhesive, laundry detergent, reading glasses, non-skid slippers, nail clippers and nail files.
- Microwaves or small refrigerators: Sometimes needed in some ward areas, please contact Voluntary Service for locations.
- Pre-paid phone cards: For veterans to call their loved ones long distance.
- Personal CD/FM/AM or cassette players: Needed for patients in hospice or on wards.
- Underwear: Mens and ladies especially larger sizes. Only brand new undergarments will be accepted.
- Lodging: Funds are needed to assist vets from out of the area with lodging for themselves or family members that accompany them.
- Hospitality cart: Individually wrapped food items are needed to distribute to those waiting for care.

All donations will be acknowledged with a “Thank you”letter within 30 days after receipt.
